Cosa vediamo
  • City of Kamakura
  • Kotoku-in Buddhist temple
  • The Great Buddha of Kamakura
  • Tsurugaoka Hachiman-gu Shinto shrine
  • Komachi-dori shopping street

Cosa facciamo
  • Leaving the port of Tokyo behind, we will travel south to reach the city of Kamakura, a small coastal resort best-known for its religious temples and warm and welcoming atmosphere.
  • Our first destination is the *Buddhist temple of Kotoku-in belonging to the Jōdo sect, a branch of Pure Land Buddhism devoted to Amitabha, the Buddha of Infinite Light.
  • The temple is home to the Great Buddha of Kamakura, a huge bronze statue which, at a height of almost 14 metres, is the second tallest of its kind in Japan. Constructed in 1252 and now situated in the centre of a courtyard, the ancient statue was originally located within a wooden temple which was destroyed by a tsunami in 1498.
  • Our next stop is Tsurugaoka Hachiman-gu, the most important Shinto shrine in the city dedicated to Hachiman, the Shinto god of war and divine protector of samurai and warriors.
  • We will walk along the long street bordered by lanterns and cherry trees, admiring the temple's impressive structure and the striking contrast of the vermilion red building against the emerald green of the surrounding vegetation.
  • Our tour ends with an exploration of Komachi-dori, a famous shopping street that begins at the Tsurugaoka Hachiman-gu temple and leads to Kamakura station. The street features a vibrant succession of over 250 shops, workshops, restaurants and elegant cafés , the perfect place to sample some local delicacies or buy some souvenirs before returning to the port.
